Can we literally hold the world in the palm of our hand?

There are may analogies and metaphores that convey that the world is a small place, and that its fate lies in our hands. It got me thinking, that we are nearing a point when we may quite literally be able to hold the world in our hands.

Imagine the Earth as a basketball, and think about how much area your hand takes up on the surface of that basketball. Now, what if every person on the planet simultaneously put both hands on the ground. Although we may not be there quite yet, in 10 years with the current rate of population growth, is it that far fetched to think that we may literally be able to hold the world in the palms of our hands?
